Playing with Red Holloway in a pizza type joint and we were wary of getting paid…the pepperoni seemed to be more important than the quartet. We blew through the sets flawlessly…Red was remarkable! End of set, back room… Red and I were puttin’ our shit in cases…there in the sax case was a 45 revolver…he said “did you get the dough yet?” I went and got it immediately!…I loved the education from these elders…they were beautiful to me. We called Red “The Gangster of Jazz” after that and he is one of my favorite memories in the music,
