The first tour with Nat Adderley, of course had me and my cohorts eager to hear his story. We were scheduled to go out with Chet Baker but he had suffered a collapsed lung in Milan and our agent contacted Nat. I had been concentrating on Chet’s music for a month and it was quite an unexpected switch of tours…In retrospect, It all turns out as it should, I suppose. Nat was such a gentle human. He had open heart surgery not too long before this and he was a tad fragile but the pure example of a lifelong trooper. I do remember the first time he laid his eyes on me…I got the, by now very familiar and not unexpected or undeserved, white boy look…Nat became a familiar after just a few gigs and hangs. I remember a night in my home at the time (trashland motor home)…Nat was fearful of my dog (a beautiful husky) and when he left that night to hit the hotel…he liked her! When Mr. Adderley spoke of his brother he referred to him as “Cannon” and always teared up…brothers. All I can really say is…Nat you were the absolute best of men…Miss Sally’s Song to you! Always called this tour “The wrath of Chet tour”…
